Acnes bacteria and prevent them from multiplying and spreading in the body. Even though results become visible faster, antibiotics are usually not favored by patients, as they lead to side effects, such as dyspepsia, discoloration of the skin, lightheadedness and sensitivity to light.
For severe cases of cystic acne, your general practitioner may prescribe isotretinoin (Accutane) or may send you to a specialist. Because serious side effects are possible, males and females taking Accutane should be carefully monitored by their doctors. If other acne treatments appear inefficient, laser or light therapy may be used.
