A combination of punk and hardcore tendencies are the basis of the EMO subculture. The term "emocore" originates from emotional hard-core and is said to have appeared the middle of the 80s. Founders of the music style added melodic elements to their tunes. Sorrow, affection, sense of guilt are common topics of their songs. Hence, the emo style could be defined as rock music with emotional lyric features. Still, the definition of the emo style is still a matter for debate. Even though the emo subculture was originally regarded as a music genre, today it is referred not only to music, but also to behaviour, fashion, style and the way of life. The emo style is believed to be unfashionable. This way emo adherents show that they are not interested in social processes. They wear skinny jeans, ordinarily in bright colours, and tight T-shirts, with names of emo bands printed on them. Studded belts and black wristbands are common accessories in the emo fashion. Piercing is also one of the ways of decorating the body that is popular with emos. Black Converse sneakers are usually worn by emos. Some males also wear thick black horn-rimmed glasses. The emo fashion is also recognised for its hairstyles. Popular looks are long side-swept bangs, usually covering one or both eyes. Straightened and coloured black hair is also a part of the emo fashion. Blue, red, pink or blond highlights are very trendy. At the beginning of the 2000s, the emo style was associated with a clean look, but when youngsters stuck to the style, it became darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the colour black superseding sweater vests. Emos are exceedingly sensitive people. Specialists define them as introverts who are unwilling to interact with the world around. Instead, they display their thoughts by means of poetry. Poems they compose are full of sorrow, nostalgia and desperation. Typically these emotions are typical of teenagers aged 12 - 18, when they are emotionally unstable. For a great many emo adherents emoism becomes a way of life.
