According to the National Health, Lung and Blood Institute, almost 2 of every 3 Americans are overweight. Furthermore, corpulence is the second main cause of preventable death in the United States. A diet is usually the first thing that a person will turn to when it comes to losing weight. A diet is about changing eating habits. A balanced diet should include a lot of fruit and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat diary products, and a limited amount of lean meat, poultry and fish. The healthy diet differs from the so-called fad diets which promise fantastic results immediately. Still, most fad diets are unhealthy, as they mean starvation. The major disadvantage of fad diets is that the body loses a lot of fluids and muscle tissue. These are the two key components that the body needs to burn body fat. If you go on a fad diet, you may notice a considerably large loss of weight at first. Lacking in vitamins, protein, fats and carbohydrates, your body becomes sensitive to viruses and bacteria. Moreover, because your metabolism (the chemical process by which food is changed into energy) is slowed down, it becomes extremely hard to lose weight. Thus, most people give up. To lose weight permanently, it is necessary to modify your food consumption. The good thing is that there is no need to give up your best-loved "comfort foods" to eat right. Instead, make them healthier by replacing ingredients. Thus, regular sour cream can be replaced by its low-fat counterpart. Eat low-fat ground poultry in place of ground beef in a meatloaf recipe. Fresh fruit or vegetables from home, for instance, are far healthier than that vending machine cake. If you are eating out, select smaller portions, share large servings or take leftovers home for the following day. It is reported that more Americans than ever before are polishing off whatever food is placed in front of them. Individuals unconsciously consume as much as 56% more calories when select larger portions. Avoid high-calorie foods low in nutrition, such as candies, fizzy drinks, chips and cookies. Remember that no smart dietary program is efficacious without physical activity.
