| Two types of erectile dysfunction are distinguished. Rare as it is, primary impotence means that a male has never had an erection sufficient for intercourse. Secondary ED, a loss of erectile ability after a normal function, normally proceeds slowly unless resulted from an injury or sudden medical condition. Male sexual problems were once believed to be triggered by psychological problems. But today we are well-aware that conditions such as strain, depression and fear of sexual failure are at the root of only 10% - 20% of ED. It is most often brought on by physical factors, for instance blood vessel disorders, neurological disorders, penile abnormalities. Male sexual dysfunction can also be a side effect of certain prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs.
Nevertheless, whatever the causes are, it is typical of males who face sexual disorder to have feelings of anxiety, guilt and low self-esteem.
The U.S. FDA has approved only three oral medications to treat ED: Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra. All work by escalating the blood flow into the penis, so that when a male is sexually stimulated, he can attain an erection.
Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra work by a similar mechanics to lead to erections. There are subtle differences in how long and how quickly the drug works. Levitra works a little longer than Viagra. They both take effect in approximately thirty minutes. Viagra works effectively for about 4 hours, while Levitra for 5 hours. Cialis works a bit quicker (within about 15 minutes), and the effects last much longer - up to 36 hours in some cases.
Though each medication has proven efficacious, none is cure-all. And they can bring on problems when interact with other medications. Note that drug-to-drug interactions with nitrates or nitroglycerin cardiac medications can bring on a dangerous decrease in blood pressure, which can be fatal. More general side effects, such as splitting headaches and - in case of Viagra - visual changes can be observed.
Alongside oral therapies, there are other methods, such as vacuum therapy, penile injections, urethral pellets and penile implants for severe cases of ED. The type of therapy, hence, depends upon the severity of ED. |
